Assuming you have a service offer on the market, there are specific steps to take that ensure service quality. Remember that quality begins and ends with the customer. Feedback from existing customers is therefore critical. Quality involves meeting service level expectations and so your customer has an exceptionally pleasant experience. Exceeding service expectations can be nice, as it may delight customers; but failing to meet service expectations is sure to cost you business. Think of service delivery as a hygiene factor, much like taking a shower. If you take two showers you are no cleaner than taking one; if on the other hand you fail to take a shower your oversight will be noticed when you present yourself in public.

Thus service quality objectives follow directly from business strategy (where else could they come from?), and business strategy itself must incorporate quality objectives. Aiming to be the "world's best" is hardly necessary and rarely useful. The more insightful question is, "Are we offering our services in such a way that we deliver high value to customers while controlling our costs?" Service quality is thus not a question of whether your service is superior to that of a distant competitor or whether you meet arbitrary industry benchmarks (both of which can be useful in some situations). Your goal is not to impress industry analysts. Rather, you must determine if your service offering is suitable for your purpose given your business strategy.

Generic Value Products

It's a shock to realize that most companies operate under the same strategic guidelines: satisfy customers, treat employees well, and make a profit. What sets a service organization apart is not its generic strategy, but the particular, individual situation in which a given firm finds itself. Each firm's quality agenda must match its competitive position, its budget constraints (current & future income), and the benefit-oriented value proposition it offers customers.

It is common to over-engineer service offerings in the name of "quality improvement," or "capturing the market," or "customer satisfaction." Product engineers and visionary leaders tend to have a perfectionist bent. It's fun, it's cool, and everything is a "must have." But it's the job of the responsible quality manager to add in and take away - to balance the tradeoff between benefits and costs. If for example your (new and existing) customers would be perfectly content with four-hour on call responses and 24 hour non-emergency replies, but you're managing to 30 minute on calls and one hour non-emergency responses, then you're shipping cost. That is, your service offering has features that do not benefit our customers. If the actual or projected market doesn't want the service you're providing, and it costs you money, stop doing it. Allocate your money to better uses.

This emphasis on benefit-oriented service quality is certainly subjective and difficult to measure. Acknowledge subjectivity is part of the quality game. Quality measures are both subjective yet critically important. Continual quality improvement will measure service offers in terms of (current & future) customer satisfaction, and will always balance the tradeoff between (current & future) income vs costs.

The best way I can help you find New Company Name Ideas is to actually give you a real life example. The purpose of this is to get your train of thought veering in the right direction. It really isn't as hard as you might think. I am going to share a few simple techniques that anyone can follow in order to achieve the perfect new company name.

Firstly, you will need a dictionary, (one with a thesaurus). The reason you need a thesaurus is because you will be looking for synonyms. In case your not sure what 'synonyms' are, they are words that are 'similar'.

Generic Value Products

I am going to use a 'Book Shop' as an example for our New Company Name Ideas. Now 'The Book Shop' would be a bit boring and not very memorable, and it's more than likely already been taken, so how can we improve on this boring name and give it an exciting twist that will stand the test of time?

Start by looking up 'Book' in the dictionary. The description is as follows; 'bound set of printed or blank pages; a literacy composition of fact or fiction'.

Underneath, as I read down the page, we have 'Book Case', Book Club', 'Book End', Book Mark', 'Book Man', 'Book Stall', 'Book Worm' and my favourite 'Bookish' which means fond of reading.

Any one of these names would make a great New Company Name, but don't stop there. Explore some more into related words that we uncovered when we searched our base word 'Book'. By continually looking up related words, you can generate a quality targeted list and move words and phrases around until you come up with some great new company name ideas.

The next place we are going to look is on the internet. The internet is not just for finding a local plumber and paying your bills on, there are a whole host of tools that are available to you, and are totally free of charge.

The best tool I know about is the 'Google Keyword Selector Tool'. It allows you to type in a main keyword, and then generates a list of related keywords. You can compile a great list of new company name ideas just by entering different related keywords, then play around with those keywords.

Company name Ideas are often triggered visually, so use resources that are all around you. Phone directories, yellow pages, local newspapers, magazines etc. Open your mind to ideas and they will come from everywhere.

A couple of things to remember are; pick a name that will grow with your company. It's no good being 'Kettle Mania' if you are going to be selling toasters and other electrical goods later on. You will need to choose a generic name that covers all electrical items, not just kettles.

Make sure the name is some what memorable. Dave's Cafe just doesn't quite cut it! Check that you are the only one with that name. Get it registered and be official. The last thing you want is to be sued before you even start!

Inspiration is what you need when searching for New Company Name Ideas.

Books will be written about the rise and fall of General Motors, probably as many as about the Roman Empire. While GM probably did everything wrong, no one is looking at Microsoft and many other US companies. Microsoft, who owned the PC market completely, misjudged the Internet. In doing so they allowed market focus to become fragmented. Today in the US, there is a cancer on the corporate body and it runs far deeper than we care to consider. The issues with GM, Microsoft and most other major corporations all arise from the same feeding trough.

In the 1950s cars reached critical mass in the US. Following a wartime shortage, US manufacturers struggled to keep up with the demand. As pent up demand was satisfied, cars moved from utilitarian forms of transportation where reliability was the most important factor to one of style. It became an event when the new models came out in the fall and dealers often took advanced orders. GM, by clearly defining five levels of automotive prestige, was able to provide quick styling changes while using almost interchangeable parts. A door shell for a Chevy fit a Cadillac as well as all other GM brands. This form of consistency allowed GM to cut costs and quickly adjust to market style burying all other competitors. GM even made inroads into Ford's market so that by 1955 Ford had its first public offering.

Generic Value Products

Recently it was announced that GM was planning on abandoning its Pontiac brand. A few years back GM abandoned Oldsmobile, one of the first cars to be manufactured - even older than Ford. In the 1950s each of the GM brands held a different market. By distinguishing between the brands GM could support multiple non-competing agencies in the same area. If we are to trace back the decline of GM, it is not to the invasion of European cars and later Japanese cars. It is not in bad management. It is not in negotiating unsustainable labor contracts. The demise of GM, like the demise of all profit centers in a company, lies in the demise of brands.

Brands have franchise value beyond the value of the product. A generic Cadillac is not as valuable as a branded Cadillac. With a brand comes a market expectation. In the 1950s a Cadillac was the best brand in the world, certainly better than a Mercedes. In an attempt to steal or maintain market share, GM depreciated the prestige of the Cadillac and in doing so signed their death warrant. The key to keeping market share of a high end product is in making and servicing the best. Once a company establishes the high-end then all other products fall in place. Can't afford a Cadillac? Then go for the understated elegance of an Oldsmobile. It is as good under the hood, but just does not have the flair of the Cadillac. This moves the customer up and down the line in prestige without one brand competing against the next.

Sadly, no one is blaming the demise of quality and brand recognition in the failure of GM. Instead GM is casting aside the one real asset they still own - brand franchise. Oh well - all this mess with GM and Chrysler only makes Ford a better company.

After just about any meeting, successful or note, it never hurts to follow up with a thank you note. It shows you respect your client's time and even if your product wasn't a good fit this time, your client knows you're a courteous, professional colleague he'd like to do business with again.

Email or snail mail? You know best; think about the client's company culture. Usually email is fine, especially if you're thanking for something informal like time.

Generic Value Products

Your tone is also something only you can gauge. When in doubt, more formal is better. You don't have to be cold or stuffy but do be respectful.

Here are a few examples you can customize to your own situation.

Example 1:

Dear Todd,

It was a pleasure meeting you yesterday. Your ideas on new approaches to sales in our region were insightful and a great help to me. Thank you for making time to meet with me and for sharing your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Josh,

It was a pleasure to finally get a chance to meet you today. Your research project sounds very interesting and offers a compelling value proposition to to the mobile phone carriers. As discussed, my team has done extensive work in the type of data collection that your research requires.

Please let me know if I can provide you with more details about how we would work on the project.

Look forward to speaking with you soon.

-----------------------------------------

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your time today. Jack and I very much appreciated your input on our new business development strategy. I know that you have a number of demands on your schedule right now so the fact that you took as much time as you did to guide us is even more welcome.

We will be sure to circle back with you when the plan is finalized in order for you to provide your stamp of approval as well as any final comments.
